The earliest mountaineer to reach the summit of Devil's Thumb was Fred Beckey in 1946. It took him and two others 50 days. Alaska's rugged scenery featured strongly in the Klondike gold rush of 1887, with the trail to the gold fields leading through mountainous terrain.
